Q: “What Pairs Well With Retinol?”
The over-the-counter topical retinoid boosts collagen production and improves texture, but it can irritate skin. We asked three Long Island dermatologists what to pair retinol with to make it work better for your skin.
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is the gold standard for revving up collagen production and increasing cell turnover, both of which lag with age. With consistent use, you can expect smoother, more-even-toned skin. But even the over-the-counter version can be drying and irritating for some. Layering it with another product can help to offset these effects and, depending on its active ingredients, may even boost skin repair and rejuvenation.
Pretty Local asked three leading cosmetic dermatologists on Long Island to share some of their favorite OTC retinol combos.
Kavita Mariwalla, MD, is a cosmetic dermatologist based in West Islip and the president-elect of the American Society of Dermatological Surgeons.

Dr. Mariwalla pairs AlumierMD Ultimate Boost Serum, $105, a hydrating peptide serum, with Skin Better Science AlphaRet Overnight Cream, $140, which combines retinol and lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). “Two products, three actives: retinol, an AHA, and a peptide to boost the production of collagen and elastin, and ensure the retinol doesn’t dry out your skin,” says Dr. Mariwalla.
Charisse McCall, MD, founder of Gold Coast Dermatology in Commack was named “Best Overall Cosmetic Dermatologist” at the 2023 Long Island Beauty Awards.

Sensitive skin has a fragile barrier, the outermost layer. Tiny microscopic tears allow moisture to escape and irritants to penetrate. Fortifying the skin’s barrier with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid can offset sensitivity and make tolerating an active ingredient such as retinol easier.
“My go-to night regimen is a retinol cream topped with a moisturizer rich in hyaluronic acid and lipids to protect the skin’s barrier,” says Dr. McCall. Her favorite duo is La Roche Posay Redermic R Retinol Cream, $55, and Eucerin Immersive Hydration Night Cream, $26.
Jeanette Graf, MD, is the author of Stop Aging, Start Living.

Retinol doesn’t have to be a cream; there are many different formulations that contain the active ingredient. Dr. Graf likes her Dr. Jeanette Graf, M.D., Skin Rejuvenation Exfoliating and Firming Pads, $38.50, which include retinol, paired with CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, $24, to lock in moisture. “These retinol pads exfoliate dead skin cells to give your skin a smoother, firmer, more moisturized look while reducing fine lines and wrinkles,” she says.
