Black-Owned Beauty On Long Island

Having worked in women’s magazines for 20 years, I feel qualified to say that my industry didn’t always do a good job promoting diversity. I cringe when I think about how many hair or makeup stories I’ve read or even written in my magazine days that did not mention natural, textured hair or dark skin tones. That’s not okay. And if someone still doesn’t understand privilege, here’s just one example: You’ve never experienced not being represented in a magazine that’s supposed to be for all women. 

Many women’s magazines (the ones that are left, that is) and websites do a far better job these days of being inclusive across all skin tones and hair textures and representing many different shades of skin in the pages of their magazines. And still, many can do better.  

I can do better, too. Since its inception, my goal for LI Beauty Scene and Pretty Local has always been to be inclusive in my coverage and promote and celebrate the culturally and ethnically diverse beauty industry we have here. I want my readers and the professionals I feature to feel represented in my coverage of Long Island beauty. To that end, I have compiled a list of Black-owned beauty businesses (more lists to come) and their Instagram handles — from freelance makeup artists to full-service salons. This list is a work in progress and will be updated regularly, and it will always be a free resource for business owners and readers.
